The NBA Draft is always a spectacle
and this year was no different. Granted, ESPN owns
the sports world, but things would have been more
enjoyable without Chris ''Back Back Back Back''
Berman giving away the picks before they were announced
with a sorry attempt to play on words.
It’s funny how fast things
change sometimes. Right now, it may seem like eons
ago, however, the NBA has undergone a vast –
and comprehensive – change from the selfish,
me-first, one-on-one style,
The Toronto Raptors will make
the first selection at the NBA Draft for the first
time in franchise history on Wednesday, June 28,
a dubious honor that comes along with finishing
near the bottom of the standings once again.
We’ve seen the Miami Heat
dominated in Dallas by the Mavericks. Can a change
of scenery make a difference?

The NBA Playoffs in 2006 have
been pretty exciting. While many were thinking both
conference final matchups were going to end up being
duds.
Steve Nash is the two-time NBA
Most Valuable Player. But he might not be the MVP
of the playoff series between the Phoenix Suns and
the Los Angeles Clippers.
With the first-round of the
2005-06 NBA playoffs just getting under way this
weekend with several interesting match-ups, I thought
this would be a perfect time to look back through
the annals of NBA history and rank the ten greatest
postseason performers of all-time.
Coming off one of the worst
seasons in franchise history, speculation is swirling
around the New York Knicks as everyone is wondering
what type of makeover the club will undergo in the
offseason.
Calling all GM’s, calling
all GM’s! Commencing this summer, sometime
between the months of July and October, several
NBA megastars will be on the auction block for trade
to the highest bidder.
We’ve been wrong all this
time. You actually can have your cake and eat it,
too – provided you’re the Chicago Bulls.
Oil and water don’t mix.
Neither did Nick and Jessica. That’s how ugly
things are likely to get Monday night when the No.
3 Florida Gators meet the No. 2 UCLA Bruins to determine
the 2005-06
NCAA men’s basketball Division I champions.
For the first time since 1980,
none of the regional No.
1 seeds has made the Final Four. The Duke Blue
Devils were knocked out in the Sweet 16; this past
weekend, they were joined on the sidelines by the
Memphis Tigers, the Villanova
George
Mason?!?! Yup, one of the longest shots to win
it all has made it to the final four of this year’s
NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. After two
of the most stunning, suspenseful and spellbinding
weeks in the history of the sport,
When I had a riveting conversation
last week with friend and radio host, Matthew Ross,
I had no idea one of my offhand comments would be
the catalyst for penning another column but that’s
exactly what happened when I said to Ross, ‘if
Steve
Nash were on the Los Angeles Lakers, they’d
be one of the best teams in the west.’
From slam dunks to spectacular
three-pointers, NBA
television highlights are dominated by offensive
razzle-dazzle. Occasionally you’ll see a big
block or a sneaky steal, but for the most part defensive
plays do not make it to SportsCenter.
Friday’s slate of four
Regional matchups has a little something for everyone.
There are two No. 1 seeds trying to survive against
tough competition, two up-and-comers about to collide,
and a rematch from last month’s mid-major
Bracket
Busters television spectacle: George Mason versus
Wichita State.
This is a popular question
being asked by many hoops fans heading into the
Sweet 16 this week. And the trendy answer to the
question appears to be Memphis. Why Memphis? That
may have to do with the fact that the Tigers are
not from one of the major conferences like the other
three
No. 1 seeds.
Two rounds are in the books
at the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. We’ve
seen the usual share of upsets, but brackets across
the nation are holding up pretty well – three
of the top four seeds have advanced in three of
the four regions. The Washington Region, on the
other hand, is guaranteed to send a mid-major team
into the
Elite Eight.
There are 16 NCAA
Tournament first-round tilts on the Friday docket.
Some of them are as close to foregone conclusions
as you can get in men’s college basketball
(enjoy the ride, Oral Roberts Golden Eagles). Here’s
a look at four games that should prove to be more
competitive, including odds.
If Paul Pierce’s recent
offensive outburst hasn’t convinced Celtics
director of basketball operations chief, Danny Ainge,
that he needs to alter his plan to help the C’s
become a more competitive team over the next three
seasons, then I am unequivocally calling for Ainge’s
ouster.
Duke, UConn, Villanova, Memphis,
blah, blah, blah. Rather than bore you with more
chatter about the top four seeds, let’s take
a look at the top four betting
teams heading into Thursday’s first-round
games.
The
field of 65 has been set for the NCAA men’s
basketball tournament. There were some surprise
snubs left on the outside and a handful of weak
sisters allowed into the dance, but the folks on
the selection committee have still given us a tremendous-looking
bracket.
We are on the cusp of yet another "maddening"
time of the year. It's when men are separated from
boys, performers from chokers, legends from.....okay,
that's enough of the typical comments.
He’s been out of the headlines for more than
a month now, which would suggest the time is ripe
for another Ron
Artest escapade. If and when Artest does something
outrageous it will mar what has been a fairly decent
transition to his new team, the Sacramento Kings.
Why wait for Selection
Sunday to analyze the teams going to the NCAA
Tournament? We already know the identity of a handful
of dancers, thanks to those conferences who wanted
to get their own tournaments out of the way in the
first week of March – or, in the case of the
Ivy League, don’t even hold a conference playoff
to determine a champion.
Over the past couple of weeks,
team executives in Orlando have been waving their
Orlando
magic wands and making players appear and disappear.
Last Wednesday, they made whiner Steve Francis and
his enormous contract vanish to New York with former
Magic star Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza appearing
in his place.
I made my yearly venture to my hometown (Mobile,
Al) for Mardi Gras last Friday. Unfortunately my
bling bling has yet to afford me the luxury of watching
television in my in-law’s minivan, so I missed
the All-Star
game, and its accessories. To be honest, I wasn’t
as disappointed as I thought I would be about that.
March Madness is nearly upon us. The best teams
in the nation are turning it up a notch in preparation
for the NCAA
Tournament. But there can only be four No. 1
seeds when Selection Sunday rolls around.
We all know that the Pistons and Spurs are widely
considered to be the front runners in their respective
conferences. Both have the experience and depth
needed to compete at the highest level in the postseason.
Yet, there’s always value in picking an NBA
underdog, a team that is close to having it
all and that could make a title run.
The highest ranked team in the Big Ten, the No.
8 Illinois
Fighting Illini, slipped to fourth place in
the conference Tuesday after dropping a 72-64 decision
to the Michigan Wolverines. The Illini were favored
by 2 ½ points in Ann Arbor, but put up one
of their poorer defensive efforts of the season
to allow the Blue-and-Maize to snap their five-year
losing streak against Illinois.
It has become a common refrain among NBA fans and
observers – the Detroit
Pistons will win the championship this year.
But are the Pistons really that much better than
the powerhouses in the West?
You’ve heard it a million times: defense wins
championships. Handicappers don’t care about
titles – a meaningless exhibition game pays
out just as nicely – but this year’s
college
basketball results show that you can have your
tenacious ‘D’ and cash in, too.
March
Madness is approaching. The last time we saw
the Marquette Golden Eagles in the national spotlight,
some guy named Dwyane Wade was leading them to the
Final Four. Things have changed in the past three
years, but it looks like Marquette is back on the
map.
We hit the NBA
All-Star break at the exact right time for some
teams, while others wish their hot streaks could
have gone on a little longer. In the case of the
bottom-feeders, they're just fantasizing about watching
the playoffs in between rounds at Pebble Beach.
This NBA season has had its moments, but for the
most part, it's sort of had an anti-climatic feel
to it.
Just before I sat down to write this column, I had
to ask myself once again, ‘Are the LA
Clippers really for real?’ After careful
consideration and examination, I have concluded
– along with head coach Mike Dunleavy coincidentally
– that the unequivocal answer to that query
would be a resounding yes.
The NBA is a star-driven league led by brand names
like Kobe, LeBron and A.I. Gilbert Arenas does not
have a brand name yet, but that may soon change.
For the second straight year, Arenas was snubbed
in fan voting for the All-Star Game this Sunday
in Houston, despite the fact that he’s the
fourth-leading scorer in the NBA averaging 28.3
ppg. The 6-foot-4 Wizards
point guard also leads his team in assists with
6 apg.
Life in college basketball’s
most storied conference isn’t always easy.
The Big
Ten standings were shaken up this weekend after
losses by No. 9 Illinois, No. 11 Michigan State,
No. 21 Indiana and No. 22 Michigan. Three of those
powerhouses were the victims of upsets, including
a rare conference loss by the Hoosiers at Assembly
Hall.
February 6, New York –
The first ball of the 2006 NBA All Star game won’t
be a jump ball, it will be small and white and hit
with a cue stick; and BetUS.com
will be joining Magic Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and
Queen Latifah for a pre-game Challenge.
