Big Al's
Free Pick Of The Day -
Twins vs. Indians (MLB) - Jul 5, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Play: Twins Title: Big Al's FREE Saturday Baseball Winner.
At 7:10pm our complimentary selection is on the Minnesota Twins over the Cleveland Indians. As surprisingly good as the Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, and Minnesota Twins have performed in the first half of the season, that's how surprisingly bad the Indians have been. The team that won the AL Central in 2007 by eight games is really stinking it up in 2008. Cleveland is now one of the worst teams in the American League and in the cellar of the Central division trailing first-place Chicago by almost a dozen games. Things won't get any easier for the Tribe in the second half, as their ace, CC Sabathia is probably gone before the trade deadline. The Twins young righthander Kevin Slowey is a soft-thrower who may not have the best overall numbers, but has been close to unhittable recently. In his last four starts, Slowey is 3-0 (the team is 4-0) and has only surrendered three earned runs in 29 innings. Slowey's strikeout ratio is up this season (54 in 72+ innings) and he has kept his walks down (less than 10 free passes so far).
Cleveland's Aaron Laffey has been so-so this year, and Minnesota may take advantage of the young lefty tonight. It's incredible to think that the team that lost the best starter (Johan Santana) in the league during the offseason is having a better year AND it is getting it done with -- among other things -- great starting pitching. Take the Twins.
Matt Fargo's Free Pick Of The
Day -
Chicago Cubs vs. St Louis Cardinals (MLB) - Jul 4, 2008 8:15 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: 111 St Louis Cardinals
The Cubs are in a struggle right now and they cannot seem to right the ship. They have lost seven of their last nine games and on the road alone, they have dropped eight of their last 10. It has been a mix of bad pitching and hitting as the arms have allowed five runs or more seven times over the 10 games while the offense has scored more than five runs only three, averaging a mere 4.4 rpg. The pitching problems go back even further as Chicago has allowed 5.6 rpg over the last 14 games.
The Cardinals are coming off a split with the Mets as the two alternated wins and losses. The St. Louis offense was held in check which was a rarity as it came into Thursday having averaged 5.8 rpg over its previous nine games. Despite last night’s letdown, the Cardinals are hitting .303 over their last 10 games and they want to carry that over into this series. St. Louis trails Chicago by just 2.5 games in the National League Central and it comes in a solid 10-3 in its last 13 games as a home underdog.
Braden Looper is coming off an early exit last time out against the Royals but it wasn’t a complete disaster as he allowed only two earned runs. He had tossed three straight quality starts before allowing four runs in Detroit prior to the game against Kansas City. His ERA is 2.92 over his last six games and his record sits at 3-1 only due to poor run support in the lone loss. Looper has allowed three runs or fewer in seven of his last nine starts and has a career ERA of 2.37 against Chicago and is a perfect 4-4 in quality starts.
The struggles of Carlos Zambrano continue. After posting eight quality outings in his first nine starts through May 12th, he has only three over his last seven. His ERA over those seven games is 4.67 which is up from a 2.03 ERA though those first nine games. He has gone three straight games on the road without a quality start and his ERA over those games is 7.13. Zambrano has absolutely owned the Cardinals but he is not in the form he needs to be in to continue that domination. Play St. Louis Cardinals 1.5 Units
Fargo was on the wrong side of yet another come from behind victory last night, this one from Cincinnati. The 4th of July will be a big rebound day as plenty of fireworks will be on the diamond as well! Fargo has won 6 of his last 11 Double Dog Twin Packs so grab the two best dogs on the card as we go for the SWEEP! We nail another one tonight so you can not miss out!

Chicago Cubs vs. St Louis Cardinals (MLB) - Jul 5, 2008 3:55 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: -109 St Louis Cardinals
Kyle Lohse will take the ball from manager Tony Larussa Saturday afternoon with hopes he can avenge his worst loss of the season. We'll play on him and his teammates to do so as they try to keep pace with the division leading Chicago Cubs in the second game of their weekend series.
Lohse was tagged for 9 hits and 8 earned runs in 6 innings pitched in the Cardinals 9-3 loss to the Cubbies back on May 3rd. We'll assume it was just one of those days as Lohse has been solid for the Cardinals all season. The right hander who signed as a free agent over the summer is 10-2 on the season with a 3.67 ERA. He has been a pleasant suprise for a Cardinals pitching staff decimated by injuries. That loss is the one blip on his home record this season as he is 5-1 with a 2.77 ERA at Busch stadium this year. The Cardinals are 8-1 in his last 9 starts. We expect him to rebound with a strong perfomance against the Cubbies giving his team a chance at the win.
Ted Lilly was the winnig pitcher that day in May and will oppose Lohse once again as he takes the mound for the Cubs. Lilly is 4-3 on the road this season with a 4.19 ERA to boot. His team is 5-4 in his road starts this year. Lilly might struggle some this afternoon against a Cardinals team hitting .319 agaisnt southpaws the last 10 games.
Even with last night's win the Cubs are still a below average team on the road. They are 18-25 on the road this year and 5-16 in their last 21 road games against a team with a winning record. The Cardinals have rebounded well in this spot all season and are 13-1 in game 2's this year. Expect that trend to hold up this afternoon.Play on the St. Louis Cardinals for 1 unit.Good luck to all.

Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners (MLB) - Jul 5, 2008 10:10 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: -127 Detroit Tigers Pick Title: MLB Free Play - Detroit vs Seattle
The Detroit Tigers look to win their second game of their four game weekend series with the Seattle Mariners after splitting the first two games with last night's loss. The Tigers have been hot winning 9 of their last 13 games putting them at 43-43 overall. After spending most of the early part of the season at the bottom of the AL Central the Tigers have climbed back into contention and sit only 6 games in back of the Chicago White Sox.
Tonight the Tigers will send right-hander, Armando Galarraga to the hill tonight. Gallaraga is in the midst of a superb season 7-2 in 13 starts and sports a sparkling 3.19 ERA. He has been very effective on the road where he has gone 5-1 with an even better 2.23 ERA. The Tigers have won all of his last three starts. This will be his first career start versus the Mariners.
The Mariners although mired in last place in the AL West at 34-52 then have been playing good baseball as of late winning 6 of their last 8 including last night's win over these Tigers. Although they have been struggling at the plate all season long they have managed to hit .309 as a team over their last seven games.
The Mariners will counter with a right-hander of their own in R.A. Dickey. Dickey has a decent 4.53 ERA overall as a starter this season but he has really struggled at home where he has yet to win going 0-3 with an astronomical ERA of 10.80. In three career appearances versus the Tigers, Dickey has a 6.55 ERA.
SUPPORTING TRENDS: GALARRAGA is 9-1 (+8.2 Units) against the money line in games played on a grass field this season. SEATTLE is 8-18 (-12.0 Units) against the money line with a hot bullpen whose ERA is under 3.00 the last 10 games this season. SEATTLE is 0-8 (-8.7 Units) against the money line after allowing 1 run or less this season.
A lot of baseball games come down to pitching and in this one you have a total mismatch. It's not much of a price to plop on the favorite when you have such a disparity in pitching tonight. I'm taking the Tigers in this one.
Michael is red hot with his Top Rated selections going 8-1 his L9 and tonight is locked and loaded to cash in again with his 86% ATS MLB Power Play! Dont Miss this GUARANTEED selection!
Tony Karpinski
Kansas City Royals vs. Tampa Bay Rays (MLB) - Jul 5, 2008 7:10 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: -140 Tampa Bay Rays Pick Title: FREE PICK
The Rays protect their home field. That is so important for a young team looking to get in to the playoffs. Overall they are 34-13 at home. 34-13!!! Twenty games over .500 is no easy accomplishment.
The Rays are a balanced team with speed and hitting. That is one of the reasons they haven’t had a long losing streak and why they are a first place team. They are fourth in the league in pitching and they are eighth in the league in runs scored. One last stat, they have 96 stolen bases. Remember that speed doesn’t slump.
The Minnesota Twins enter into todays mlb action on fire, having won 14 of their 16 overall, and 11 of their L13 at home in the Metrodome. Their opponents the Cleveland Indians are operating at the proverbial opposite end of the performance spectrum , after losing their 7th straight game yesterday to the Twins by a lopsided 12-3 count. Kevin Slowey the Minnesota Twins starting right hander today against the visiting Cleveland Indians, enters this tilt, mimicking his teams successes, and is off his first career shutout on Sunday against the Brewers, allowing just three hits. It was the 24 year olds fourth consecutive quality start, which extended a 16-inning scoreless streak, that has also seen him, over power and strike out 24 batters over a 29 inning stretch. Slowey has garnered a nifty 3-0 record along with a minuscule 0.93 ERA during that stellar span. Meanwhile, his pitching opponent from the Tribe, rookie, Aaron Laffey (4-5,3.24 ERA)is currently not in good form, as is evident by a 0-2 record and slightly bloated 4.58 ERA in his last 3 starts. He has shown the ability to pitch out of jams, but I keep getting this feeling, his luck is soon to run out , and hes going to end up on the wrong side of a beat down. Final notes & Key Trends:Cleveland ha lost 21 of their 28 road games and are 8-23 in their 31 as underdogs. Twins are 8-0 in their last 8 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150. With both pitchers and both teams obviously moving in different directions, Im suggesting we go with the flow, and back the upward momentum of the red hot Twins in this spot. Play on the Minnesota Twins
