While the New Jersey Nets are dogged by trade rumors involving their two biggest stars, their mediocre season on the hardwood continues. Despite the presence of Jason Kidd and Vince Carter in the lineup, the Nets have struggled to even challenge the .500 mark and have played to or below the level of almost every team they have faced. Their opponent, the Sacramento Kings have underachieved at an almost equally efficient clip.

In this battle of mediocrity, Jason Kidd should be able to dictate the pace of the game because of the Kings' inability to guard him. Sactown’s PG Mike Bibby has lost a step in recent years and has recently lost interest in playing in Sacramento at all. This should give the Nets a decisive edge. The other subject of trade talks, Vince Carter (24.7 points per game on the season), should meet his match in Ron Artest, one of the league’s most ferocious defenders.

Sacramento will be playing in their second of back-to-back games on the road, which bodes well for the Nets and their 14-13 record at home. Sacramento has been reeling of late, having lost three straight prior to a three-point victory over the pathetic Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

When online betting against the spread, remember that New Jersey has a decent 28-24-2 record ATS, while the Kings are nine games under .500, with an abysmal 21-30-1 mark.

While both teams float in NBA purgatory with players from each roster waiting for the trade deadline, I expect the Nets to beat the Kings, whose effort has been slowly fading since the beginning of the season. Sacramento’s misfit backcourt of Artest and Bibby won’t be able to run with Carter and Kidd on this night.
