I was sitting in a
bar the other day and my good friend, Greg,
who happens to be a beloved fan of the New
Orleans Saints, like yours truly, turned to
me during the fourth quarter of our inevitable
loss to the St. Louis Rams and asked me, point-blank, “How
good are the Boston Celtics?”
At first I was a bit taken aback. This late
in the year, most talk at tables full of pitchers
of beer in the early Sunday afternoon revolves
around the pig-skin. Basketball? All ready?
Yes, my friends, basketball all ready! Not just
any basketball talk but basketball questions
about a team so devoid of any flaws that the
very thought of them reminds me of honey.
They’re just so sweet, baby! Those, Celtics!
I mean, the thought of another team from Boston
taking down a championship makes me a bit queasy
but the Celtics are so good, I really can’t
argue against anything they’ve done, or
will do, this season.
Yes, Greg, and reader-land,
the Celtics are indeed that good. They put
the twinkle back into every Irish lassie’s
eye and they will continue to do so with their
round-house dunks and defensive pressure.
They’re also a welcome retreat from the
West Coast brand of round-ball which is starting
to look like what it does every year. I mean,
can somebody get better, or at least as good,
as the San Antonio Spurs? I hate to say this
but style points do count in the NBA and, unfortunately,
this team’s style is like The Republican
candidates for the United State’s presidency.
There’s something there, but nothing that
can really get you interested. The Spurs are
the most brilliant unpredictable team to every
lace on a pair of high-tops and that makes them
very difficult to back from an NBA bettors’ point-of-view.
Okay, enough talk!
Let’s get down and
dirty on some up-coming weekend games:
Firday, Nov. 16th –
Detroit Pistons vs. Los Angeles Lakers - The
thought here is that the Pistons will be favored
by 4 or 5 points in this one. The Pistons still
have one of the top five starting fives in the
NBA and the Lakers, as I expected, have started
to fall on hard times - - again. But, for the
Lakershow, Lamar Odom is back and they are at
home. Be very careful about taking the Pistons
on a Friday night in L.A. to cover any sort of
spread and the Pistons are good enough to where
that spread might be, like I said, 4 or 5.
Houston Rockets vs.
San Antonio Spurs – This
should be the head-liner but it’s sort
of like two competing gallons of vanilla ice-cream
fighting it to catch your eye in the super-market.
Yao try dunk ball! Duncan block dunk! Spurs win
by six points!
New York Knicks vs.
Sacramento Kings – I
love these games where two heartless wannabes
step onto the court and see who can win a game
by default. I especially love it when both coaches
are so gosh-darn talented and are surrounded
by guys who will walk through fire for them.
Especially for Isaiah. You’ve got to love
a guy who has more definitions for a word than
Bill Clinton. I mean, is there any reason in
the world to think about this game? Yes, because
the line will be incredibly low and the Kings
still have fans that care. The Kings cover whatever
the spread ends up being between these two posers.
Saturday, Nov. 17th –
Phoenix Suns vs. Houston Rockets - The Rockets
show up twice in this write-up because after
they lost to the Spurs on Friday, they get to
go home and play nice versus the Phoenix Suns.
The Suns are starting to heat it up, but they
may not heat it up enough to take out the Rockets.
Expect the line to be somewhere around 3 or 4
points in favor of the Rockets. That makes the
Suns a pretty good bet, I think, since Amare
should be getting healthier, right? Okay, that
has nothing to do with it. The bottom line is
that the Suns get to rest on Friday while the
Rockets have to deal with the Spurs.
Chicago Bulls vs.
Los Angeles Clippers - The Bulls got their
first win versus the Detroit Pistons. But,
that great win hasn’t translated
into more wins. Maybe, this team is just overrated.
I don’t know. One team that is definitely
overrated is the Los Angeles Clippers. They shouldn’t
be playing this well, but Mike Dunleavy is a
good coach and, unlike Isaiah, he does say what
he means and means what he says. I like the Clippers
in this one because the Bulls aren’t going
to turn it around in time after having to play
in Phoenix on Thursday, Nov. 15th.
Memphis Grizzlies
vs. Dallas Mavericks - The Mavericks don’t lose these types of games.
They just don’t. Now, the likelihood of
them covering or not might be - - what the heck
am I talking about! The Grizzlies are pathetic
and the Mavericks are at home for this one. The
Mavs will cover easy.
Sunday, Nov. 18 –
Chicago Bulls vs.
Los Angeles Lakers – Come
to think of it, Chicago might win their game
versus the Clippers. Hmm, no, strike that, the
Bulls will win this game because after the Clippers
spank them by ten, they get a nice, juicy, against
the spread line to work with against a team that
they match-up well against. Kobe might be on
fire in this one, but the Bulls will be ready
for it. The Lakers will be feeling so-so on Sunday
after having faced the Pistons on Friday. They
might completely look past the Bulls while the
Bulls might be trying to prove that they don’t
need Kobe. We all know that they do, but they
might be trying to prove that they don’t.
See how that works?
Boston Celtics vs.
Orlando Magic - Yes, I am taking the Celtics.
I know. There’s all
ready grumbling in the sports world about how
many minutes Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin
Garnett are playing. People, not a single one
of those guys is 34 or older and this is the
NBA, folks. The NBA! Those three are so good
that most nights they’re going through
a work-out while all of the other players are
trying to learn how make a twenty-foot jump-shot.
Take it easy okay? Doc Rivers knows what he’s
doing. These guys won’t get hurt and they
won’t have trouble covering a spread versus
the Magic.
Until next week, good luck!
