The NBA has a great legacy
back to the 1940’s with superstars from
George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan
and Shaquille O’Neal.
So why do we have to wait
until the playoffs to get some really great basketball?
You see, when watching the
eight NBA playoff games this weekend, I had to
check the TV Guide to make sure I was watching
the right sport. All the games played had an excitement
and intensity to them that you seldom see during
the regular season.
Granted, it is hard for NBA
players to play 82 games a year at a frenetic
pace. There is a ton of travel involved, and these
guys are running up and down the court for 48
minutes. Contrast that with baseball where there
are 162 games, but the players spend the majority
of the game chewing tobacco in the dugout or standing
in the field waiting for the ball to be hit.
Still, it would be nice to
feel like the NBA regular season had a little
more meaning, and that the players were giving
it their all every night.
If I had one complaint about
the NBA playoffs, it is that the first round series
are all seven games. Flashback to as recently
as 1983 and you see that first round series were
just three games. That made for tremendous excitement
as a lower seed was much more likely to advance.
The five game, first round
series was around from 1984 to 2003 when it was
expanded to seven games. NBA owners could not
pass up the extra money from gate receipts and
television networks. In my opinion, the first
round would be far more exciting if it was back
to five games, but cash is king, and the seven-game
format is here to stay.
Heading into this past weekend,
the Kings’ Shareef Abdur-Rahim had played
the second most games in NBA history without making
the playoffs. He played his first playoff game
against San Antonio on Saturday, and lost 122-88.
Talk about anti-climatic!
Other Saturday winners were
Cleveland over Washington 97-86, Miami beating
Chicago 111-106, and the Clippers holding off
Denver 89-87.
The play continued on Sunday
with four more contests. Detroit beat Milwaukee
92-74, Phoenix took care of the Lakers 107-102,
and it was Dallas over Memphis 103-93. The upset
of the day was Indiana beating New Jersey 90-88.
The Pacers came into that game as a seven point
underdog.
From a betting perspective,
favorites were 4-4 against the spread this weekend.
