The NBA regular season ends
in about three weeks, and there is the normal
jockeying of position as teams try to move up
in the standings. The most attention deservedly
goes to the teams just trying to make the playoffs,
and there are a number of teams still alive in
both conferences.

Now: Denver 30:1 Win Conference Championship
Eastern Conference Playoff
Betting
Philadelphia is 32-38 and
fighting for a chance to lose to Detroit in the
first round of the NBA playoffs.
The 76ers’ schedule
over the next week is pretty favorable, including
a home and away game against the lowly Knicks.
They also have home games against Boston and Chicago.
Allen Iverson and Chris Webber are both scoring
at an impressive clip lately, but the team has
still lost 10 out of their last 12 games.
Philadelphia’s only
real competition for the final playoff spot is
Chicago (31-40). The Bulls have struggled most
of the year, but are playing a little better of
late, winning two of three.
Chicago’s remaining
schedule is easier overall than Philadelphia,
and they have two head-to-head games left. The
problem with the Bulls is they don’t have
a dominant player like Iverson to lead the team.
Don’t look for this team to overtake Philadelphia.
Western Conference Playoff
Betting
There are three teams in
the Western Conference with a legitimate shot
at the 8th playoff spot. They are Sacramento,
Utah and New Orleans / Oklahoma City. It is assumed
for these purposes that the Lakers will be able
to keep their two game lead over Sacramento for
the 7th spot.
First place in the West is
still up for grabs between San Antonio and Dallas,
either of which is a daunting task for the eventual
8th seed.
Sacramento is 36-36 and has
a 1.5 game lead over Utah. This is a very good
home team at 23-13, but they really struggle on
the road (13-23). Still, this is a much better
team since Ron Artest arrived, and they could
be a dangerous first round opponent.
Utah’s (34-37) rookie
point guard, Deron Williams is playing much better
basketball this month after struggling in January
and February. It will be hard for the Jazz to
catch Sacramento with their tough schedule, but
Utah could cause match-up problems in the first
round with their size up front.
New Orleans / Oklahoma
City is 33-37 after losing 12 of their last 14
games. The playoffs are a pipe dream at this point,
but the year will serve as a good learning experience
for their young players like Chris Paul.
