NBA free agency is upon us,
and there has already been a signing which has
upset the balance of power in the East.
Editors note: The Bulls
are 20:1 to win the NBA title. Miami (5:1), Detroit
(11:2), New Jersey (14:1) and Cleveland (20:1)
are the only Eastern teams with lower or equal
odds.

The bombshell that we speak
of is Chicago signing center Ben Wallace away
from Detroit. The 31 year-old Wallace immediately
provides the Bulls with a major defensive presence
in the middle, and he is one of the best rebounders
in the NBA.
Since Wallace is offensively
challenged, to say the least, and the Bulls already
have another player like that in Tyson Chandler,
Chandler will soon be traded. There is already
a verbal agreement to send him to New Orleans
for veteran power forward, P.J. Brown and guard
J.R Smith.
Those three players join
a solid Bulls’ nucleus which includes Ben
Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, Andres Nocioni, Luol Deng
and top pick Tyrus Thomas.
Chicago is hoping that by
adding Wallace and Brown, they will have a better
chance of matching up with Shaquille O’Neal’s
Heat in the postseason. In this past playoffs,
Miami beat Chicago in six games, and having Wallace
could have made the difference between winning
and losing.
The Bulls other immediate
benefit of the Wallace signing is it severely
weakens Detroit. Not only was Wallace a big part
of perhaps the best starting five in the NBA,
he was an extremely popular player with the fans
as well.
The Pistons tried to do some
damage control on Tuesday by signing center Nazr
Mohammed.
However, the 28 year-old
Mohammed is a journeyman player who is now with
his 5th team in just nine seasons. Mohammed is
neither the shot blocker nor rebounder that Wallace
is, and he has never averaged even 30 minutes
per game for a season.
Since Mohammed is not a full-time
solution at center, Detroit is going to be forced
to go to a small line-up at times with Rasheed
Wallace playing the pivot. It also means more
playing time for power forward Antonio McDyess,
who will play alongside Rasheed.
Detroit’s problems
on the court are made worse by the fact that some
players are angry with Pistons management for
letting Wallace get away. Add up all these facts,
and you can see why some people think that Chicago
has already have overtaken Detroit.
Make sure that you
keep checking with VIP.com as the championship
future odds are constantly being adjusted throughout
the free agency period.
