Final Four Bracket Review - Monday Rewind - March 27, 2006

The NCAA tournament is down the Final Four, which means it is time for everyone to commiserate how their brackets have gone to Hell in a Handbasket. The Final Four teams include a two seed (UCLA), a three seed (Florida), a four seed (LSU) and an 11 seed (George Mason).

The big shocker of the weekend was number one seed Connecticut losing to George Mason, 86-84 in overtime. Connecticut had been playing with fire the entire tournament, and could have easily been bounced out by Albany or Washington in earlier rounds. They finally got burned yesterday and I can’t say they didn’t deserve it.

The story of George Mason keeps getting better and better as more chapters are added. They are the lowest seed to make the Final Four since number 11 LSU did it in 1986.

The current version of the LSU Tigers is also in the Final Four after beating Texas 70-60 on Saturday. They will meet a hot UCLA team that defeated number one seed Memphis on Saturday, 50-45.

The final entry in to the Final Four is Florida. The Gators knocked off number one seed Villanova, 75-62 behind Joakim Noah’s 21 points and 15 rebounds. Noah is officially flying up the NBA draft charts and he and Tito Horford were just too much for Villanova’s small line-up. Florida now gets upstart George Mason on Saturday.

With Villanova losing, this is the first time since 1980 a number one seed hasn't made the Final Four.

Michael Robinson’s Original Bracket

As far as my original bracket goes, it all started off so promising. At the end of the first two rounds, I had 12 of the 16 teams still alive. Heading into the Elite Eight round, those numbers dwindled to four out of the remaining eight teams.

Alas, out of the Final Four teams, the only one that I had picked right was Florida. Of course, the bracket flame-out puts me in the majority, but that doesn’t make me feel any better.

The only thing that cheers me up is knowing there are four quality teams left in the tournament, and that the games to be played this Saturday night are sure to be special. VIPsports Edge will have great coverage this week so check in daily.
