The Sweet Sixteen is
chock-full of great college players, but only
a small subset of those will be selected high
in this year’s NBA draft. Here is a look
at five players this weekend who are expected
to be in the top seven picks come June.
LaMarcus Aldridge, Texas
Aldridge is not that well
known because he is only a sophomore and only
played half his freshmen year due to a season
ending hip injury.
At 6’10” and
240 pounds, Aldridge has good size to play the
power forward position in the NBA. He still needs
to get bigger, stronger and meaner to excel at
the next level, but he is likely to be the number
one pick in the draft.
Adam Morrison, Gonzaga
Morrison is a 6’8”
player with the Larry Bird offensive game, and
the same ugly mustache to boot. He is scheduled
to be a top two pick in the draft.
Personally, I don’t
get it. He doesn’t rebound very well, has
shown no great ability to pass the ball, and his
defense will be far below average at small forward
in the NBA. Whoever drafts him that high is making
a huge mistake in my opinion.
Rudy Gay, Connecticut
Gay was thought to be the
number one pick before this college season, but
inconsistent play has dropped him down a small
notch.
Gay is 6’9” which
gives him ideal size to play small forward in
the pros. He is averaging over 15 points and six
rebounds per game in his sophomore year, and he
would probably be putting up better numbers on
a less balanced team.
Joakim Noah, Florida
Noah is the son of France
tennis legend, Yannick Noah. He has risen to the
top of the charts in his sophomore year after
limited playing time as a freshman.
The scouts love Noah’s
length at 6’11”, but at 230 pounds,
he is going to have to put on some serious weight
to play power forward in the pros. His best attribute
is running the floor, and he is just scratching
the surface on his potential.
Tyrus Thomas, LSU
Thomas is a 6’9”
freshman who is already an elite shot blocker
at the college level. He is also a very good rebounder
at over nine boards per contest.
Thomas is not overly tall
for the power forward position in the NBA, and
he will need to add bulk as well. Thomas has received
a lot of comparisons to LSU alumni, Stromile Swift.
That could actually hurt his draft stock as Swift
has been just an average pro.
